HOW IT WORKS

Whether you’re looking for a neuropsychological assessment for yourself or your child, let me assure you that we can help. The sooner we get started, the sooner you or your child will have the support needed to excel.

For children and teens, the process begins with a parent intake session that lasts 45 minutes to an hour. In this session, we’ll chat about concerns, history, and what you've noticed at home or school. If you have any previous records, like past tests, school assessments, or accommodation plans, those will be helpful to review as well. This will give us a clear picture of what's been happening and where we might need to focus our attention. The testing sessions themselves usually consist of two 3-hour blocks, often scheduled across two consecutive mornings, but there's flexibility as needed to accommodate your unique schedule.

After testing is complete, we’ll schedule a feedback session to go over the results. I’ll then compile all the data, which typically takes 2-3 weeks, and have it ready for our scheduled appointment. During this meeting, we'll discuss what the tests showed, any diagnoses, and most importantly, the recommendations tailored specifically for you or your child—and I’ll be sure to explain the “why” behind every aspect of this review.

Then, you'll receive a written report that’s comprehensive but easy to understand. It will include a detailed history, behavioral observations, test results, and a summary of what it all means. We’ll also talk about where in the brain certain challenges you face may be originating and I’ll suggest strategies and supports tailored to your or your child’s needs.

Recommendations might include therapy, executive coaching, memory techniques, or specific school accommodations like individualized instruction or modified testing environments. For children or teens, I usually arrange to meet with their school's team to ensure everyone is on the same page. Whether we're addressing ADHD, dyslexia, or another concern, the goal is always to create a structured but flexible plan to help you or your child thrive.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about neuropsychological evaluations

  • This can vary depending on what we’re assessing, but typically testing takes 5.5-6 hours, split across two mornings. If the assessment is for a child or teen, there will also be a parent intake session before the assessment is conducted, which will last 45 minutes to an hour. Then, after I’ve put together a full report, which may take a couple of weeks, we will have another meeting to go over results and recommendations.

  • Neuropsychological evaluations are comprehensive evaluations of the skills that go into learning and behavior. In other words, the assessment looks at the brain through what the brain does. Specific tests measure verbal ability and nonverbal reasoning, the skills that are put together into an “IQ” test. Other tests measure academic skills such as reading, writing, and math. When looking at learning disabilities like dyslexia, there will be measures of basic literacy skills such as phonological awareness and decoding. I will also give measures of attention and executive functioning, short- and long-term memory, specific language skills, visual information-processing, and fine-motor skills. In addition to the history gathered in the interview, I also give standardized measures of emotional and behavioral adjustment, so that I can incorporate those into the overall profile.

  • I cannot prescribe medication, but can provide referrals for medication. I personally don’t do therapy but can refer you to a therapist who specializes in your diagnosis. If the diagnosis falls under her areas of expertise, I may refer you to my wife and the co-owner of this practice, Cheryl, for ongoing psychotherapy support.
